| RIP Steve Gerber 1947-2008 |
[Feb. 12th, 2008|01:50 am] |
One of my favorite writers in comics, Steve Gerber, died yesterday in a Las Vegas hospital of pneumonia whilst awaiting a lung transplant.
My God. I'm about in tears here.
Among his more famous creations were Man-Thing, Morbius the Living Vampire, Guardians of the Galaxy, Omega the Unknown (currently being revived by Jonathan Lethem), and of course the almighty Howard the Duck. He was in the midst of working on a revival of Dr. Fate for DC.
He is also one of the earliest and most vocal proponents of creator's rights in the industry, famously suing Marvel over ownership of Howard, in a case that brought to light the whole issue of rights. Indeed, this spawned another one of my faves from the 80s, Destroyer Duck, published by Eclipse and drawn initially by another all-time great who himself was having legal issues with Marvel at the time, Jack Kirby.
Additionally, during the 80s he worked on scores of cartoons that people my age watched: GI Joe, Thundarr the Barbarian, Thundercats, New Batman Adventures, etc.
Truly, this man was a giant amongst men.
His blog is still up. Go. Read it. And then go find old 1970s issues of Howard the Duck, and enjoy those as well. |

| HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIM |
[Feb. 12th, 2008|01:57 pm] |
sgtwessel turns 30 today.
However, unlike his eldest brother who spent his 30th in a drunken stupor watching The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion live, Jim is stuck in South Carolina for the next 6 weeks going through a recruitment course that he doesn't want to take for a 36-month assignment he doesn't want to do either.
So, all sympathies and hope it's a good 30th regardless Jim. |
