STARTREK.COM staff "eliminated"
Here's today's WTF Moment:

12.14.2007
Goodbye from the STARTREK.COM Team

Sadly, we must report that CBS Interactive organization is being restructured, and the production team that brings you the STARTREK.COM site has been eliminated. Effective immediately.
We don't know the ultimate fate of this site, which has served millions of Star Trek fans for the last thirteen years.

If you have comments, please send them to editor @ startrek.com - we hope someone at CBS will read them.

Thank you for your loyal fandom over the years. It has been a pleasure to serve you.

Uhhhh....HUH?

Ummmm....Star Trek is, like it or not, still the biggest and most recognizable major SF franchise in the world (argue that against Star Wars if you want, just don't do it here), millions upon millions of devoted fans, and despite no current TV offering, still has scads of merchandise being produced and, oh yeah, A MAJOR MOVIE IN PRODUCTION WITH JJ ABRAMS AT THE HELM.

And CBS Interactive "eliminates" the website staff in a "restructuring move"??

I can count the number of times I've visited the site on one hand, but this is crap. I smell WGA strike retaliation...

It's completely understandable that they'd axe the website - they're relaunching Star Trek with an all new movie with an all-new cast. Why wouldn't you completely revise your web presence as well?

See that's the thing -- the site is still up and running. They haven't said one thing about the site itself, just the producers of them. Given their support for the writers (there's a link on the front page to "Strike Trek"), I can see where this might in fact be retaliation on the part of Viacom.

Yes, this is a corporate entity we're referring to. Unlike, say, another SF show I can name which is just as much of a corporate entity, but I've got the producer's Email address and have had it for years :-)

Yeah, that other corporate entity are practically the textbook case of how you *should* treat your fans.

True. I've not heard of one site being forcibly taken down before or since the new series.

There's a fan club here in Perth that was actually sent a letter in the early 1980s granting them legal permission to watch episode together at meetings.

WELL HELL'S BELLS.

Did nobody see my Black Summer review, or has nobody else read that issue yet?

It's my fault. I wrote a few months ago to complain that the comic strip on the site, despite the claims of the author of being a fan, reads not as if it were aimed at fellow fans but as if it were about stereotypical fans and aimed at a mainstream audience. I guess the website staff finally read my email, realized they were all wrong for the job, and quit en masse.
