My Fellow Americans...
"My fellow Americans." Good way to start a screed, eh?
*ahem* MY FELLOW AMERICANS.
By now, I think we all know what tomorrow (Tuesday) is. And I should truly hope that we all know what's at stake tomorrow.
This is the big one, the real serious one. The one we really can't afford to fuck around with. Believe me, I am all for alternative points of view (and hold many of them!), but I don't think this is the time to be casting votes for them.
But hey, you know what? I still believe in this country, in the ideals of them, even if they have been twisted and perverted in unspeakable ways these last 8 years (And before some smart-ass corrects my math, I do mean 8, starting from the point Bush and friends rigged the election and started us on this slow boat to fascist Hell). If you wish to "vote with your conscience" and go for other, non-mainstream candidates, you go right ahead. That's what they're there for, should you so desire.
I know which way my own conscience is guiding me this year, and I'm pretty sure the rest of you know by now as well.
But I just want to get this off my chest.
Have you LIKED this country the last 8 years, let alone loved it? Is this a nation that has done right by you, by its people, by the world?
Do you want to continue the way we are now? Or do you wish to see it become a better place?
Do you want to continue to be scared, to live in fear? Or do you want to see the light in the darkness, and be hopeful, rather than fearful?
Do you want to be a divided nation? Or do you wish to see us diverse, yet united in spirit?
These are the principals that are at stake here. This is, summed up, the choices of the future direction of our country.
And here's the big secret: any change to come is not going to be instantaneous. In fairness, NEITHER candidate has said it will be immediate. Neither on November 5, 2008, NOR January 20, 2009, will the sky be bluer, and the birds won't chirp a little higher. But we have to start somewhere.
I can honestly say for myself, that never in my life have I seen a candidate be so inspirational. And let's be honest: never once has he made a promise. He said what he WANTS to do, sure. I'm willing to give him the chance to try them out, as well.
But I digress.
The point is, there are two roads for this country to go down at this point. One leads to Hell, the other...?
Tomorrow (and if you've early-voted, congratulations) it comes down to checking a box.
Let your conscience be your guide, and pray you make the right decision.
I know I will be.
Finally, as they say:
"Good night, and good luck."
"My fellow Americans." Good way to start a screed, eh?
