- 16:51 @mattsheret IN AN EXCITING ADVENTURE WITH NOT-DALEKS #
- 17:42 OK, here's a real quick What I've Learned About Comics Writing (So Far): Hold onto your ideas, but don't get married to them. Chances are... #
- 17:43 ...there's someone out there's who's had a SIMILAR idea to yours, and may in fact be getting it published right now. This has happened to me #
- 17:43 ....more than a few times. One of the more recent examples was coming up with a concept similar to Image's DYNAMO 5 title. #
- 17:44 I created HEROES. Yeah, seriously. NBC, "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World," fired Jeph Loeb this past season, yeah, that one. #
- 17:45 It wasn't CALLED HEROES, of course, and it wasn't ENTIRELY the same thing but it was close enough. It actually started out in 2002 as a..... #
- 17:46 ....proposal for BBC Books, for consideration as a DOCTOR WHO novel. (And actually it was 2003, oops). But, it needed work, so I meandered.. #
- 17:47 ..on it, changed some concepts, developed all new ones, even changed the Doctor/companion cast TWICE. Before I knew it, it was 2005. #
- 17:47 The new, vastly superior WHO series was announced, and the novels slushpile was closed forever. That sucked, and I sat on it a bit, until... #
- 17:48 ...I hit upon the idea of transplanting it to modern times, removing the DOCTOR WHO material entirely, and develop it as a TV show. For real #
- 17:50 So, work commenced on that. ANd continued, continued, etc. etc. And then, in 2006.... guess what was announced for the Fall season on NBC? #
- 17:50 Again, it wasn't the ENTIRELY same thing, but it was ENOUGH to where it didn't make working on it viable. Or seen as a cheap ripoff. #
- 17:51 This happens all the time tho. Marvel + DC have had similar concepts debut in the same MONTH before: outcast heroes (X-Men + Doom Patrol)... #
- 17:52 ...and horrific swamp creatures created by accidents of science (Swamp Thing, Man-Thing). So long story short, don't think just because..... #
- 17:53 ...YOU thought of it, doesn't mean someone else hasn't thought of something similar. Don't assume someone else is stealing from you, either. #
- 17:54 That's just being petty. Always be thinking. The real world will provide stimulus for ideas constantly. Be on the lookout and use your brain #
- 17:55 One day I got into a Twitter discussion with 2 other creators. We discovered we were ALL working on a daikaiju (Giant Monster) comic idea. #
- 17:56 HOWEVER, at least from my POV, I figured out the individual projects were sufficiently different for me not to despair or panic. #
- 17:56 (Which is good, cuz MY monster was designed by A Famous Comics Artist, too, ha ha ha) #
- 17:57 That's all I got for now, feel free to comment, dissent, etc. Thanks for listening. #
- 17:58 RT @kitschfactor If you have an idea, write it down and let it marinate. It might seem great at the moment, but sometimes ... #
- 17:59 RT @kitschfactor ...you just gotta sleep on it. Look at it a day later, a week later. Go back and see if it all fits. -- Yeah, I'll buy that #
- 18:00 And now, @neilkleid's talking about pitching again, go listen to him for a bt. I need to smoke and clock in at the bar. #
